Format and validate JSON while understanding the difference between readable syntax, valid structure and data that is actually correct.

Formatting and validation answer different questions

Formatting adds indentation and line breaks so nested objects are easier to inspect. Syntax validation checks whether quotes, commas, brackets and values follow JSON grammar.

Neither step proves that fields contain the right business data. A payload can be valid JSON while missing a required property or using a string where an API expects a number. That requires schema or application-level validation.

Read error positions methodically

When parsing fails, inspect the reported line and the token immediately before it. Common causes include trailing commas, single quotes, unescaped line breaks and property names without double quotes.

Minified data can hide the real location, so work on a copy and isolate smaller objects when possible. Do not randomly delete punctuation until the parser accepts a payload whose meaning has changed.

Be careful with data types and duplicate keys

Quoted numbers, null, false and an empty string are different values. Formatting preserves those types, so confirm what the receiving system expects before editing them.

Some parsers silently keep only the last occurrence of a duplicate object key. Treat duplicates as an error even when a formatter displays them without complaint.

Protect sensitive and very large payloads

Remove tokens, passwords, personal records and private keys before pasting data into any tool whose processing model you have not verified. Local browser processing is preferable for confidential samples, but sanitized test data is safer still.

For huge payloads, a desktop editor or streaming parser may be more reliable than rendering the entire formatted tree in a browser tab. Keep the untouched original so you can compare the result.
