A sitemap is a curated list, not a site dump

Include canonical URLs that return a successful status and that you genuinely want indexed. Exclude redirects, duplicate parameter URLs, private pages, soft 404s and pages marked noindex.

Adding every generated page can make quality problems harder to diagnose. A smaller accurate sitemap gives search engines a clearer statement about the pages you consider important.

Use absolute canonical URLs

Each loc value should use the preferred HTTPS hostname and full path. Match trailing-slash and hostname choices to the canonical tags on the pages themselves.

Split very large sitemaps when needed, but do not create artificial files for a small site. One clean XML sitemap is easier to inspect and maintain.

Treat lastmod honestly

Use lastmod only when you can update it after a meaningful content change. Regenerating today’s date for every URL on every build provides little useful signal.

Change frequency and priority are optional hints, not commands. Accurate URL selection and strong pages matter more than aggressive priority values.

Submit, inspect and improve

Reference the sitemap in robots.txt and submit the same URL in Google Search Console. Review parsing errors, discovered URL counts and page-indexing reports after Google has had time to crawl.

A submitted URL is not guaranteed to be indexed. If important pages remain excluded, inspect their content quality, canonical, robots directives, status code and internal links rather than repeatedly resubmitting the file.

No. A sitemap should contain the canonical pages you want indexed; including a noindex URL sends conflicting signals.
